Belgard Castle

When the Normans conquered Dublin they set up many strongholds in the area surrounding the city. Belgard Castle was one of the most important to the south of Dublin. It was also the residence of one of the most powerful families in Ireland, the Talbots. For many years the castle was the scene of many confrontations between the Talbots and families outside the Pale, such as the O' Byrnes and the O' Tooles. After the death of Colonel John Talbot in 1697, the castle passed hands many times.
